DESCRIPTION: APW – E. Howard & Co, Boston, extremely rare 21 jewel, Series XII, split-plate model, L-S (just over 15S), heavy 14K gold original A. Skinner & Son, Boston OF case with initials on rear, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, blued umbrella hands, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, 21J, gilt screws and regulator, gilt color mvt lettering, wheel-spoke and spotted pattern nickel damascene, s#700714. Gross weight of assembled watch 74.5 dwt (116.0 g). An extremely rare watch, the E. Howard & Co. of Boston produced only a very limited number of 21 jewel movements. Per the Howard factory records donated to the Smithsonian Institute, this movement is from a production run of 20 made spanning serial numbers 700701 to 700720 which is listed as being "New 21J" and "Gold Finish" and having been completed on April 30th, 1901. This watch also comes with a card from Dana J. Blackwell with handwritten note on the rear of "Sold to H. Boston Office, March 29th, 1905." CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates with some typical mild micro-fine scratches, screw on lever jewel setting appears to be a replacement with larger sized head and there is some substance around the screw that appears to be possibly dried oil or shellac, regulator spring is not gilt and some mvt screws are non-gilt replacements, mvt currently with some rattle within case as upper case screw has a tendency to slide back from case lip; dial with few very faint hls; excellent hour and seconds-hand, minute with some oxide at its tip; case shows light wear, scattered short scratches on band, no dents or dings, engraving detail with some reduction; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
